Options Teaching Staff
As the College Advisor for Options, I was able to counsel and assist the teaching staff (non-traditional students) in continuing their education to meet federal guidelines. Many had reservations in returning to school but we were able to work through them. My strategy when counseling the teachers was to meet them where they were emotionally and psychologically. I listen to them, ask what their goals were and tried to find a class or program that would meet their needs and align with the companies needs. It was very rewarding to see the teacher succeed in their goals and create new goals. Three students in particular were so empowered that after completing their Bachelors with the University of La Verne are
now currently pursuing their master’s degree.

Career Counseling Assignment
In CCSD 573: Career Counseling and Development, we were assigned to mentor and counsel a student or person in a career transition. Through the counseling sessions we were able to administer several assessments such as; Myers Briggs, Holland Codes, Strong Interest Explorer, and SIGI Plus Values Game. These assessments gave the counselee insight and strengthened the knowledge of their personality, likes and dislikes to help them when researching what career would suit them best. We also reviewed several websites such as O*NET and Occupational Outlook Handbook to research possible careers and the student options. This experience gave me the opportunity to apply the assessments I was learning in class and really see how it affected the person I was counseling. Times are changing, and “there is an increasing need to prepare students for multiple career transitions over a life span” (CAS, 2012 p. 140).

Personal Theory of Helping
I developed my own personal theory of helping in the course CSA 563: Counseling: The Helping Relationship. I was able to identify what is important to me when counseling others and the theories I identify with that offer techniques in working through change. Change or “Shipwreck” as Parks (2011) calls it, is when something happens “that irrevocably reorders one’s life” (p. 39). People I counsel will be experiencing their own “shipwrecks” and it will be up to me to help them develop techniques to get through the change they are experiencing.
