Current Legal/Ethical Higher Education News Assignment
In CCSD 543, Legal and Ethical Issues, I was given the opportunity to research three current legal and ethical issues higher education is facing today. I choose to write about the following three articles found in Chronicles of Higher Education; Quiet No Longer, Rape Survivors Put Pressure on Colleges, The Ambiguous Role of Money in Higher Education, What the New Campus-Safety Center Can Accomplish. Writing about these issues helped me understand how critical it is for institutions to be accountable and follow best practices in order to provide the best learning experience for students and stay out of legal problems. Lake (2011), points out that higher education and the law need to find the right balance, “use law and legalisms to manage higher education environments, but be careful not to allow law and legalisms to supplant good student affairs practice” (p. 13).

Options Files
In my current position, as college advisor, I am considered middle management, and with that come many responsibilities. One of which is access to staffs’ confidential files. Access to these files is a privilege and to be used only to ensure staff has the appropriate requirements for their current position. I am expected to maintain all information confidential and can only use the knowledge I learn to notify my supervisors if we are at risk of being out of compliance.

Threat Assessment & Social Networking
As our final in CCSD 543 Legal and Ethical Issues in CSA we were given the choice to research two current legal and ethical issues prevalent in higher education. I choose to learn more about threat Assessment and Social Networking on college campuses both are very current and crucial issues that are showing up in the media. I learned the importance of campuses being aware of their legal obligation to provide a safe environment for the students and staff, which is often accomplished through a threat assessment team. Threat assessment teams are important, because they are the ones who” strive to protect both individual rights and public safety” (Peterkin, 2012, p. 1).
