Options Masters Cohort with Pacific Oaks University
Having completed their bachelors degree in Child Development, many of the teaching staff and management were looking to further their professional growth and wanted to pursue a masters degree. This led to the collaboration with Pacific Oaks University in forming the Options’ masters cohort pursuing a master’s degree in Human Development with an emphasis in Education Leadership and Social Change. Currently, the cohort is in its second semester, there have been issues with the professors, room accommodations, dissemination of information but all have been
addressed. As the liaison, I must walk the fine line between Options and Pacific Oaks in obtaining
all the information and services the staff members need. Partnerships in general are challenging,
but having someone like me to advocate and find the common ground for both parties heightens
the probability of success (Flint & Frey, 2003).

Functional Area Interview
One of the assignments in CCSD: Introduction to College Student Affairs was to investigate a functional area of interest in an institution. I chose to find out more about the Career Services Department at a religiously affiliated institution Azusa Pacific University. The investigation included research on their services, resources available to students, website accessibility and an interview with the Director. Through my research I was able to see the importance of the Career services office was to the students but also to outside organizations. It was the outside organizations, future employers, which really benefited from a collaborative relationship where they were allowed to advertise on campus and on the institutions website, but also interact with the students in a professional setting such as programmed networking events.

Informational Interview
The course CCSD 573: Career Counseling and Development allowed me the opportunity to conduct an Informational Interview with the Director of the Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOP&S), Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) & California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids (Cal WORKS) programs. This interview allowed me to see collaboration at its true description. This counseling program collaborates with many agencies to meet the needs of specific underserved student populations. In speaking with the Director, I was able to learn just how intricate each program is and how all the regulations must be met with the resources available. Ingenuity is needed in delivering their services with the limited resources while having the students feel supported and assisted. Kuh, mentions the importance of cross-functional collaboration to foster seamless learning for students, “open dialogue throughout all levels of the institution” is crucial to ensure the common goal (1996, p. 140).
