Personal Theory of Helping
One of the assignments in CCSD 563: The Counseling Relationship gave me the opportunity to create my own individual theory of helping and to apply it to a vignette. Applying my theory to the vignette was a great learning experience, because I was able to utilize the counseling techniques I learned in class. Practice is the best way to see if the theory would work and not all situations I face will I be able to apply my theory. I have to be flexible and adapt to what the students needs. To be “effective” Reynolds (2009) says “awareness of your own comfort with chaos, knowledge of the impact that crises and conflict have on students’ personal and academic success, and the ability to handle intense emotions (yours and others’) are some of the competencies student affair professionals need” (p. 170).

Women Overall Wellness Workshop
One of the assignments for CCSD 583 Counseling Issues and Practices was to create and facilitate a workshop for college students. My group and I chose to give a workshop to Cal Poly students on women empowerment. The workshop covered safety concerns related to sexual assault, bystander/allies, and resources. The workshop provided the students with information, resources and techniques that can help them when coping with theses situations. According to Kitzrow (2009) mental health issues have risen amongst college students and institutions must find a way to help the students directly and indirectly affected. One possible solution is to equip student with the tools and resources to apply when needed through workshops (Kitzrow, 2009).

Counseling Crisis
In CCSD 583 Counseling Issues and Practices we were given the opportunity to research a topic that is currently and issue in higher education. I chose to research sexual assault in college campuses and its effect on students. College students face many crisis and conflicts in college, but one of the biggest fear women have is being raped (Kadison, 2004). There are many sexual assault effects that not only affect the individual’s mental state of being, but also academically, socially and physically (Kadison, 2004). It is crucial to increase awareness and provide resources for those affected and those helping (Banyard, Moynihan & Crossman, 2009).
